British Answer to Tesla: The Lightning GT
Electric vehicle technology has really inspired all kinds of small firms to get involved in the automaking game. In the U.S. we have ventures like Tesla and Fisker, and over in Great Britain, they have Lightning.
According to Autocar, Lightning is preparing to enter the late stages of prototype testing on its GT electric sports car. The GT was originally debuted as a concept at the 2008 British Motor Show, and much like the Fisker Karma, has been plodding along much slower than originally planned.
A little more upscale than either the Tesla or the Karma, the GT supposedly offers a Bentley level of sophistication with the performance of a pure sports car. In its latest form, the GT has 400-hp worth of two rear-mounted motors. It relies on lithium-titanate battery power, a technology that promises to be faster to charge, more powerful and more durable than traditional battery options.
The Lightning GT can achieve 60 mph in under 5 seconds and can go up to 150 miles on a charge. Charging times as ridiculously fast as 10 minutes have been cited by the company.
The new EV is expected in 2012. Each of the 250 yearly models will start at a rumored price around 180,000 pounds $289,000 (American)
